Private Acting Agent?? Please help me?
I have REAALLYYY been trying to get an acting job, and i went to this open audition thing called The (itallic h) but they asked for $6000!!!!!! and only to go to florida and MAYBE get and agent…
so now i want to audition for John Casablanca, and i have seen people say things like the classes are bad, and not worth the 2000 for 3 years. and i already have a pretty good acting background.
i saw that someone said to get a private agent and they don’t take any money to represent you just like 10 percent of what you earn.
so do you know anyone near newton (next to boston)? it would be soo great
or maybe even just some tips on what 2 do
summing it up:
should i go to John Casablancas?
If not, where can i find an agent that doesn’t take money to represent only of what i book/earn
i DO have a descent acting background and a pretty good natural acting talent.
i did dance, rythmic gymnastics, ballroom dance
now i do synchronized swimming, volleyball, i go to a russian literature class(im russian) where the teacher used to be a professional actress in russia
i am 13 and i look about 11
i want to act (proffesionally- agent!) starting now, not in college or after… not meaning i wont coninue it after college
and i have been in many school camp and russian plays(more serious than school ones)
im not sure i should pay for "classes" especially since i cant exactly wait 3 years…
maybe you know of an agency that doen’t ask for money to represent you…
haha i forgot….
the russian teacher puts on plays every year and they get more and more complicated
ive been doing it since i was 6
You sound young . . .
Have you graduated high school yet?
If no, focus on your education . . . take your drama classes and choir and dance.
The best way to get an "acting job" is to audition a lot; for community theatre, for local tv shows, etc. and via scene study classes, or college; where they do plays at your school.
If you have graduated high school, have you gone to college yet?
Consider a performing arts college in one of the big cities, or even there in Boston (a big city).
In school, you meet other actors to teach you the "business" side of show. Show business is, at most, 25% show and 75% or more BUSINESS.
Schools, such as John Casablanca, can certainly give you some insight into the business side and some technique. And any SCHOOL is going to charge.
There are no easy or free rides in the world. Especially something like an acting career. You will either train in school (i.e. high school, college, etc) and pay for your college, of course; unless you receive a full scholarship or grant.
You will have to train . . .
A "pretty good acting background" is no guarantee of work that pays, or even regular acting work.
A private agent . . . ? You mean, an agent.
Agents are the acting version of "employment agencies" — the one’s you go to who get you temporary jobs. You work for a day or a week and the agency gets a percentage of your earnings and you get your paycheck.
An agent doesn’t necessarily guarantee you work, either. He/She is more a broker to get you a certain wage. You will still have to work on your training, your health and keeping yourself alive in between acting jobs. Thus, you will need a job, or a husband or parents to support you. Because, you will need to pay rent, car insurance, car payments, eat, etc. . . .
Some agents take 20%, too . . . 10% is standard, but it varies depending on many factors.
One of the best ways to get an agent is to take classes with them at school’s such as TVI Studios or Weist Barron. Who you really want to impress, though . . . are CASTING DIRECTOR’S. Those are really the people who get your jobs. Not all casting director’s require you to have an agent.
Another way to get an agent, or the interest of local casting director’s is to do THEATRE. Audition for and get into local plays and musicals, if you sing . . . and INVITE the local agents and casting director’s to see you perform live on stage!
I have a good friend I met here who did just that (I am in New York). He did a community theatre production, called up the local SAG (Screen Actor’s Guild) and got a list of SAG Signatory agents and casting director’s in the NYC area.
He send out postcards, with his headshot, to the agents and casting director’s who represented his TYPE and AGE, and invited them to see him perfrom in this play. Of the 20 he invited, 3 showed up. 2 wanted to represent him (there were agents). He signed with the one he liked best and soon after that he was flown to California to be in his first motion picture (ever).
Since that time, you have seen my friend on tv series such as "Lost" and "24" and in about ten motion pictures!!!
He did, before doing this, have a college degree in theatre from Pennsylvania, I might add. He worked very hard, since high school, to learn all he could about theatre, acting by training and taking classes and doing small little theatre’s in New York and Pennsylvania.
And he knows a lot about money and business . . . made sure he did. It’s a business. Be smart so no agent steals your money, either. And also, while he was seeking a career as an actor . . . he worked as a waiter at a NYC Italian restaurant. And he was the best waiter they ever had. He put all his incredible energy into all that he did and does.
And he planned it all . . ..like a real business plan. This is why it worked.

john casablancas was the first place that i went, and i don’t recommend that. i didn’t actually take the classes, but i have also heard that it’s not worth it. i looked up agencies in the yellow pgs..lots of them are inexpensive, just keep going to different ones until you find a good fit

Angel Aura is giving you some bad advice!
John Casablancas, Barbizon, John Robert Powers, and ACT are SCAMS! They are NOT worth $2000.
They will NOT help you! They will get you laughed out of LA and NY. These schools are HUGE JOKES!
Use that $2000 to get GREAT headshots and study with the best. John Casablancas is NOT.
Also, TVI sucks! It’s a factory school in that they try to sell you a yearly membership for $450 and make you take crappy classes. The teachers are casting directors and NOT good teachers. You ONLY go there if you’re already a working actor and take those classes to impress the Casting directors in hopes that they invite you to audtion for their next projects.

I’m sorry that you are having a hard time connecting.
It’s hard when you are young and you really need to look out for all of the scams out there.
I’m in California but one of my networks is close by to you. Do a web search fo "New England Film."
If you dig deep enough with that site you will find casting calls and a list of agents.
You will need a portfolio.
They won’t rip you off but you’ll need an adult representative to make the contacts for you because you just do. Trust me!
The main thing is to be patient. Many young people like you share the same dream.
